Last update Wednesday January 11, 2006
Wow ... four years between updates. That's lame :-) Anyway this is just to make a not that I'm converting this aite into a blog and hopefully that will mean the occasional update that is less than four years apart!
News ... Welcome to the new home!
Welcome to the new page (sorry it was such a rush!) A big thank-you to Brad at Arrakis who has supported our team with webspace until now.
Way back in 1999 or so Vapor set us up a SETI search team. There were a few chunks searched but nothing much since then. Well it is time to give SETI equal footing around here, so if you have anywhere you can set up the SETI screensaver, please do (with permission, of course!) It seems to me that getting fellow workers to search for ET is easier than setting them up aith d.net, but your mileage may vary ;-)
Update Wednesday December 13, 2000
Hi everyone! It's been a while since I updated the team page - I must apologise for the tardiness, I've got myself a new job that's been keeping me busy (and asking the admins if I can run d.net clients :-)
If anyone thinks it is a good idea, I may move this site to a weblog of some sort. Perhaps using Blogger or something similar (suggestions welcome!)
The Optimal Golomb Ruler Searches continue
This is a great pure science project. Run by our friends at distributed.net, the search for OGR has good practical applications. Read below for some info about OGR, in short Golomb rulers can also play a significant role in combinatorics, coding theory and communications (making more efficient antennae...)
Some of our team mates have already upgraded their clients to join in the OGR search - we were team 106 on day 3, let's go for something in the top 75!
In mathematics, the term "Golomb Ruler" refers to a set of non-negative integers such that no two distinct pairs of numbers from the set have the same difference. Conceptually, this is similar to a ruler constructed in such a way that no two pairs of marks measure the same distance. An Optimal Golomb Ruler (OGR) is the shortest Golomb Ruler possible for a given number of marks. However, finding (and proving) OGR's becomes exponentially more difficult as the number of marks increases, and it is for this reason that we have turned to the web for help in finding the OGR's with 24 and more marks.
Finally - Commercial distributed systems
This is something we've been waiting on for some time. Companies are now starting up that intend to offer payments for using your CPU time in the same way that distributed.net use it.
ProcessTree Network TM
For-pay Internet distributed processing.Further distributed.net team news, we are chugging along doing over 42,000 blocks per day! The team is about to cross the 22 million block mark and we are still hanging in the top 100 teams (in the mid to late 80's in rank.)
Kudos goes to robbo, hando and ags2 who together are doing about 35 percent of the daily team totals! Wow, I'm in awe.
Aussie Teams
There are now at least 16 active Australian teams participating in d.net, which I feel is too many. There's a new page I've made that lists the teams I know of in order of their team number (which should also be their relative ages!)
Team Ranking Alert!
Hey everyone! We've been dropping the ball in a big way lately. The team has been slowly sliding down the ladder and we're in danger of dropping off the top 100! Please check that any clients you may have set and forgotten have fresh versions installed (and are still working!)
As always, ensure you computers are upgraded to the newest client that is optimised for a fast competition start is a good plan.
A reminder that our team's ID is #921 - so change your setup now if you'd like to join us. You can do that from your page at distributed.net -
We are always interested in new team members! Don't think about it, make your idle time useful now. Just grab a client, install it on your computer and use your computer's idle time in a worthy cause.
SETI@Home
The SETI@Home has started up, keeping the name "The Australian Dudes" - thanks to Vapour who originally registered the team! If you are searching for the truth out there, please consider crediting the team with your work.
Past Results?
CSC Also came and went mostly without my notice. That's because the Macintosh clients had been out of date for some time. I'm happy to report they're back and have some great things in store for the Mac users.
DES-11-2 went so fast I didn't get our final ranking - does anyone have it?
We finished DES-II at 83rd. A great effort, but we'd like to show the world we can do better. We need your help!
We finished RC5-56 in the top 50 teams, but need some serious help if we're to repeat that for future efforts ... so if you have access to the net, you can help! We welcome anyone who would like to contribute - especially if you're Australian (either in the country or abroad) or just an anarchist at heart.
